BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) is an implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols and provides an openly redistributable reference implementation of the major components of the Domain Name System, including:

  • a Domain Name System server (named)
  • a Domain Name System resolver library
  • tools for verifying the proper operation of the DNS server

The BIND DNS Server is used on the vast majority of name serving machines on the Internet, providing a robust and stable architecture on top of which an organization's naming architecture can be built. The resolver library included in the BIND distribution provides the standard APIs for translation between domain names and Internet addresses and is intended to be linked with applications requiring name service.

CONFIG

You are COMPLETELY ON YOUR OWN for configuration...Go buy the O'Reilly 'grasshopper' book on DNS and BIND, check out the ISC Website, or look to the many mailing lists and newsgroups regarding bind.

The configuration file is /etc/named.conf.  The are some example zone files in /etc/named/, but you can put these anywhere you want if you change /etc/named.conf.  YOU WILL NEED TO CREATE YOUR OWN ZONE FILES!!!

NOTES

  1. If you just want a local DNS Cache, check out DNSCache.  It's a lot smaller and easier to configure.
  2. With the release of the 8.2.3 LRP package, I am not providing the bind utilities in a zip file.  Just rename bind-bin.lrp bind-bin.tgz and uncompress it using winzip or similar if required.

UPDATES

Updated to bind 8.2.3.  Moved named-xfer from bind-bin.lrp to bind-8.lrp for folks wanting to secondary other domains.  Additional utility files no longer available as a zip file.
